Former First Lady Barbara Bush Says What Much Of America Feels: ‘We’ve Had Enough Bushes’

To celebrate the opening of the George W. Bush Presidential Center, former First Ladies Barbara and Laura Bush joined Jenna Bush Hager and her twin sister Barbara on NBC’s Today Show.

When asked if the country was likely to see another Bush — specifically Jeb — in the White House, Laura Bush echoed her husband George W. Bush in encouraging the former governor of Florida to run.

Bush Hager then indicated that she was impressed that her grandmother had not responded.

The wife of George H.W. Bush — the most outspoken member of the Bush family — decided she needed to weigh in. “He’s by far the best qualified man, but no, I really don’t,” she said. “There are a lot of great families, and it’s not just four families or whatever. There are other people out there that are very qualified and we’ve had enough Bushes.”

“He’ll get half of our friends and all of our enemies,” she added.

There’s been a major effort to rehabilitate George W. Bush’s image — something President Bill Clinton calls the “latest grandest example of the eternal struggle of former presidents to rewrite history.”

But the toxic impact of the younger Bush’s legacy is apparently something even his mother is ready to put behind her.
